The Rover by Aphra Behn.

Hello Readers,
This blog is predicated upon the thinking activity. This task has been entrusted by Megha ma'am (Assi. prof.  at English department MKBU) .

1) ANGELLICA CONSIDERS THE FINANCIAL NEGOTIATIONS THAT ONE MAKES BEFORE MARRYING A PROSPECTIVE BRIDE THE SAME AS PROSTITUTION. DO YOU AGREE?

No, I don't agree. Financial negotiations before marriage, such as discussing prenuptial agreements or financial responsibilities, are not the same as prostitution. They are quite different in nature.

Angellica's perspective, as portrayed through an example from "Rover," challenges the traditional notion of marriage and its link to financial discussions, drawing intriguing parallels with prostitution. While they may seem different, there are significant resemblances that raise questions about the essence of matrimony.

A key similarity is the role of money in both situations. Prostitution involves a direct exchange of money for a service, while marriage, with its financial talks, aims to secure financial benefits for both partners. Money is undeniably vital in both cases.

Furthermore, the importance of love is muddled in both situations. In prostitution, it's a transaction without emotional involvement, mirroring cases where financial discussions dominate marital choices. This prompts reflection on whether love truly underpins these unions.

Individuals in both circumstances may feel pressured or have limited choices. Some may turn to prostitution due to financial constraints, mirroring those who agree to terms in marriages not in line with their desires due to familial or societal pressures.

These situations inevitably spark ethical debates, encouraging discussions about the morality of prostitution and the emphasis on financial matters in marriages. These deliberations promote a deeper exploration of societal values and norms.

2) “ALL WOMEN TOGETHER OUGHT TO LET FLOWERS FALL UPON THE TOMB OF APHRA BEHN, FOR IT WAS SHE WHO EARNED THEM THE RIGHT TO SPEAK THEIR MINDS.” VIRGINIA WOOLF SAID SO IN ‘A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN’. DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT? JUSTIFY YOUR ANSWER WITH REFERENCE TO YOUR READING OF THE PLAY ‘THE ROVER’.

I completely agree with Virginia Woolf. Aphra Behn, who wrote "The Rover," deserves a big thank you from women because she helped us express ourselves freely. Back when she wrote, it was really hard for women to be writers, but she broke those barriers. In her play, she talked about important things like power and love, which showed that women could be strong and have a say.

Aphra Behn's impact on writing was huge. She wasn't afraid to talk about things like gender inequality. Her work, including "The Rover," makes it clear that women's voices matter. So, what Virginia Woolf said is right, and Aphra Behn should be celebrated for helping women speak their minds.

3) WHICH FEMALE CHARACTER BEST REPRESENTS THE PLAYWRIGHT, APHRA BEHN? CONSIDER THE CHARACTERISTICS AND BELIEFS OF EACH FEMALE CHARACTER, AND MAKE AN ARGUMENT THAT RELATES THESE DISTINCTIVE ATTRIBUTES TO WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT BEHN.

Helena from "The Rover" can indeed be seen as a character who represents Aphra Behn. Both Helena and Behn share characteristics and beliefs that align with each other.

Helena is a strong-willed and independent character. She defies societal norms and expectations, much like Behn did in her own life as a female playwright in the 17th century. Behn's determination to pursue a writing career in a male-dominated field reflects Helena's determination to choose her own path in love and life.

Helena values her own agency and freedom of choice. She is not willing to be forced into a marriage against her will, which resonates with Behn's advocacy for women's rights and independence. Behn's work often challenged the idea that women should have limited choices, just as Helena refuses to be controlled by others in the play.

Helena's character in "The Rover" can be seen as a representation of Aphra Behn because they share qualities like independence, determination, and a commitment to women's rights. Helena's story reflects the themes and values that were important to Behn in her own life and work.
