Haider as Hamlet
INTRODUCTION :
Haider is 2014 released Bollywood movie based on Shakespeare's great classical play 'Hamlet' . This movie is directed by Vishal Bhardavaj and Shahid Kapoor is protagonist in the movie . Haider is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet.
CONTRAST :
The movie Hider is depiction of the tragic play Hamlet. The director [ Vishal Bhardwaj ] made the movie in modern sense. In the movie setting is Kashmir [ in middle of insurgency ] , but In the play Hamlet the setting was set in Denmark [Elsinore Castle ] . In the play, Hamlet got informed by ghost [ his father's ] about mystery behind the death of his late father [ Old Hamlet ] . But in the movie Vishal Bhardwaj presented this scene in which he gave physical form to the ghost because in modern sense it would't be wise to depict ghost or supernatural elements in the movie. The ghost name in the movie is "Ruhdar". It was wonderfully played by late actor Irfan Khan.
MAJOR CONTRAST IN CLIMAX :
Incessantly, we see that in the play of Shakespeare most of the characters are ending up dead or killed . Similarly, in Hamlet also the major characters are ending up dead including Hamlet. But, in the movie Hider is alive in the end , and so is the antagonist of the play his uncle Khurram [ Character of Claudius ] . Although, it conveys a positive and wise message to society that revenge will always create revenge.
CONCLUSION:
Though the tale is somewhat similar in the movie and play but
also certain characters and stories are invisible as this makes the movie or
the play incomplete. Since it is an adaption so we cannot expect to be the twin
of each other. Although movie is defiantly worth watching . It is available on Netflix
or either you can download it from internet. According to IMBD this movie
got ranking of 7.5/10 as it has all
those elements of Shakespearean plays and the cinematography of Vishal Bhardwaj
which is perfectly splendid!
Taken all the consideration the story is well portrayed in the
movie in spite of all the cultural and religious differences with all those
political contexts.
Themes of Revenge, women, corruption, religion, politics,
madness are common in both the movie and play.
